The methodology I now use is a lot better than these previously described; it leads to extra correct results, and to handle. I will exhibit and clarify the apparatus because it stands, and can point out some enhancements as I go on. I use it by gaslight, and make use of rapid dry plates, which, nevertheless, underneath the circumstances of a particularly small aperture and the character of the sunshine, require sixty seconds of complete publicity. A is rigidly mounted; it incorporates the dark slide and the contrivances by which the position of the picture can be viewed; the eyehole, e, already mentioned, being part of of} A. Its focal length is appropriate to the scale of the instrument, and I find nice convenience in a lens of broad aperture when making the adjustments, as I then require plenty of light; but, as to the images, the smaller the aperture the better. The hole in my cease is simply two-tenths of an inch in diameter, and I imagine one-tenth would be extra suitable. I work instantly from the unique negatives with transmitted light; but prints A the physique of the digicam, which is mounted. For convenience of description I will confine myself to the primary occasion only, and can therefore speak of C because the carriage that supports the body that holds the negative transparencies. It is conceivable that this should be accomplished, and that the display should be changed by the dark slide, and a short publicity given to the plate; then, that a fresh transparency should be inserted, a fresh focusing adjustment made, and a second publicity given, and so forth. The adjusting screws would be out of attain; the top of the operator would be in a clumsy position; and though these two difficulties might be overcome in a point, a critical risk of an occasional shift of the plate through the frequent replacement of the dark slide would remain. I avoid all this by making my adjustments while the plate continues in position with its entrance open. I do so through the assistance of a reflector temporarily interposed between it and the lens. When the reflector is interposed, the picture is wholly reduce off from the sensitised plate, and is thrown upwards in opposition to this focusing display, g. It is upon this focusing-screen within the roof that I see the fiducial traces by which I make all the adjustments. Nothing can be extra handy than the position of this focusing-screen for working purposes. One finish of the axle protrudes, and has a short arm; once I push the arm back, the mirror is raised; once I push it ahead it drops down. I selected my looking-glass carefully, and chosen a bit, that was aircraft and parallel. In truth, it answers very respectably, especially when we consider that perfection of definition is thrown away on composites. For security in opposition to the admission of light unintentionally, I actually have} a cap to the focusing-screen within the roof, and a slide within the mounted physique of the instrument instantly behind the reflector and before the dark slide. Neither of those would be needed if the reflector was changed by a prism, set into one finish of a sliding block that had a big horizontal hole on the other finish, and a enough length of solid wooden between the 2 to block out the passage of light each upwards and downwards whenever the block is passing through the half-way position. I thus acquire beautiful fiducial traces, which I can differ from excessive faintness to excessive brilliancy, by turning the fuel decrease or larger, in accordance with the brightness of the picture of the portrait, which itself depends on by} the density of the transparency that I am engaged upon. For convenience in enlarging or decreasing, I take care that the intersection of the vertical fiducial line with that which passes through the pupils of the eyes shall correspond to the optical axis of the digicam. The uppermost horizontal fiducial line continues to intersect the pupils, and the vertical one continues to divide the face symmetrically. For success and velocity in making composites, the apparatus should be solidly made, chiefly of metal, and all the adjustments ought to work smoothly and accurately. I drew on a square card a circle of about 2� inches in diameter, and two cross traces through its centre, chopping one another at proper angles. Round each of the 4 factors, 900 apart, the place the cross cuts the circle, I drew small circles of the scale of wafers and gummed upon each a disc of different tint. I then made a composite of the 4 positions of the cardboard, because it was placed successively with each of its sides downwards. The composite I now show is what I call a hotch-pot composite; its use is to type a regular whence deviations path of|in path of} any specific sub-type conveniently gauged. It shall be noticed that the face is strongly marked, and that it - is sort of|is sort of} idealised. I claim for composite portraiture, that it affords a technique of obtaining pictorial averages, which effects simultaneously for every point in an image what a technique of numerical averages would do for each point within the image individually. It provides, briefly, the typical tint of every unit of area within the image, measured from the fiducial traces as co-ordinates. Now every statistician is aware of}, by expertise, that numerical averages usually begin to agree pretty pretty when we deal with even twenty or thirty instances. In proof that this is the case, I exhibit three other composites: the one is made from the primary 28 portraits of the 57, the second from the last 27, and the third is made from 36 portraits taken indiscriminately out of the 57. Individual peculiarities are all irregularities, and the composite is always common. I show a composite of 15 feminine faces, also of consumptive patients, that gives somewhat the same side of the illness; also two others of only 6 in each, which have in consequence less of an ideal look, but that are still typical. I then thought it better to choose from the latter the men that came from the southern counties, and to once more make a further number of 1 x from these, on the precept already explained.
